Brief author info: Muhammad (570-632) Prophet of Islam. Founder of Islam; considered by Muslims the "Seal of the Prophets" (i.e., receiver of the final and perfect revelation from God). Born in Mecca to poor family of tribe of Quaraysh, hereditary guardians of the shrine in Mecca; orphaned at age six and raised by uncle, Abu Talib; initially worked as trader. Began receiving revelations from God (c. 610), commanding that idols of the shrine be destroyed and that the rich give to the poor; belief got some support, but many opponents; reduced to poverty by time wife and uncle died. Began gathering followers; immigrated to Yathrib to arbitrate in feuds; migration (called the "Hegira") considered traditional beginning of Muslim era. Name of town changed to Medina; led followers to war with enemies of Islam; by 629, was leader of Mecca and recognized as the "Messenger of God"; by 630 controlled most of Arabia. In 632 made last pilgrimage, died shortly thereafter in the home of one of his wives, Aisha, daughter of his devoted follower Abu Bakr, who succeeded him.
