Brief author info: Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) Indian writer and philosopher. One of India's most influential thinkers; composer and painter. Born in Calcutta, son of a wealthy family; published first book of poetry at age seventeen; studied law in England; returned to India, where he managed family estates, and began collecting Hindu legends and stories. Founded communal school with mission of blending Eastern and Western thought (1901). Major works include The Crescent Moon, a book of poems about childhood; a play Chitra\ Binodini, one of first modern novels of India; and The Religion of Man. Received Nobel Prize for literature (1913); knighted by the British in 1915, but resigned his knighthood shortly thereafter in protest of British policy in India.
