During the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1969), branded as a counterrevolutionary and sentenced to internal exile; rescued by patron Zhou En-lai. After Zhou and Mao died, became de facto leader of China; promoted extensive economic liberalization and limited political reform; most recently, supported crackdown on democratic rights movements.
