Upon release, took the name Malcolm X and promoted Nation of Islam and black nationalist causes; initially opposed to integration. Views changed after the hijira (pilgrimage to Mecca), where he wTas struck by ideas of Islamic brotherhood. In 1964, founded Organization of Afro-American Unity; which promoted many orthodox Muslim beliefs, along with antiracism and anticolonialism. Wrote The Autobiography of Malcolm X with Alex Haley.
