Brief author info: Omar Khayyam (1048-1122) Persian poet and astronomer Famed as one of greatest composers of rubdiydt. or quatrains; also mathematician; known for scientific achievements in his own land. Born in Nishapur; after education, went to Samarkand, where wrote important work on algebra; Seljuq sultan became his patron, inviting him to make astronomical calculations for reform of calendar, and to work on observatory in Isfahan. Later became court astrologer. Literary work remained largely unrecognized until Edward Fitzgerald translated and arranged the quatrains into the Rubdiydt of Omar Khayyam (1859), which eventually gained worldwide attention.
