God, who winds up our sundials ...

What if God is a woman? Not only am I going to hell, but I'll never know why.

I have too much respect for the idea of God to make it responsible for such an absurd world.

Good God, how much reverence can you have for a supreme being who finds it necessary to include such phenomena as phlegm and tooth decay in His divine system of creation?

It would be very nice if there were a God who created the world and was a benevolent providence, and if there were a moral order in the universe and an afterlife; but it is a very striking fact that all this is exactly as we are bound to wish it to be.

How terrible the need for God.

Many people believe that they are attracted by God, or by nature, when they are only repelled by man.

With God, what is terrible is that one never knows whether it's not just a trick of the devil.

Either God exists or He doesn't. Either I believe in God or I don't. Of the four possibilities, only one is to my disadvantage. To avoid that possibility, I believe in God.

Man is certainly stark mad. He cannot even make a worm, and yet he will be making gods by the dozens.
